Rules
Hnefatafl is played by two opponents. One is the attacker and the other is the defender of the King. The overall mission for the attacker is to kill the King by surrounding him on four sides. The overall mission of the defenders is to get the King to one of the four corners of the board.

The attacker moves first. Each piece can move horizontally or vertically as long as no other pieces are in it's way. Pieces can't move in a diagonal line.

An ordinary piece is caught, when it is surrounded on two opposing sides by enemy pieces.

The King is the only piece, that can occupy the throne square in the centre of the board. He is captured only when directly surrounded by 1) four enemy pieces, 2) three enemy pieces and the throne, or (in some versions) 3) three enemy pieces if he is at the edge of the board.
